b'Ive been working with Uniting just 12 months and within those 12 months they got me a home, she saidNot only that but they supported me right I feel like Ive been through it all.here for yearsOne minute I had nothing and now Ive gotand years. I sleepa home.Uniting is the only organisation that has helped beautifully. Its theme in five years.beginning of myI mean truly helped me.It has taken Wendy some time to adjust to having future in a sense. a place to call her own. When she first moved into the property she said, I sat there, and I thought when do I leave?Should I be here?It didnt feel real. When I took some boxes into my homeI love that word nowI actually just stuck them in the cupboard. I sat down and I thought, what am I doing Wendy? Youre unpacking but you just put all the boxes still sealed in the cupboard. I went and I grabbed them out and I thought, no, no, no. No more living from boxes. After a few weeks in her new house, Wendy is finally starting to feel at home.I feel like Ive been here for years and years.I sleep beautifully. Its the beginning of my future in a sense. Its all I ever wanted, just a little home. When asked if she had anything else she wanted to share about her experience of homelessness, Wendy opened up about some of the stigmas those without a home face.I think homelessness is pretty hard to explain to someone who hasnt experienced it or been around people who have, she said.People can tend to blame the person. Its their fault or theyve mucked up. Or theyve done something in their life. They dont stop and see that homelessness can come in the blink of an eye. What youve got right now can be gone.I dont think a lot of people understand that.I worked three jobs, I bought a homeI did all that and I ended up homeless. We need to have more compassion for other human beings.Wendy has done just this her whole life and Uniting are grateful we were able to work with her to return the favour. 14 Uniting Housing Annual Report 20212022'
